Unfortunately, copper thieves do not seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Clearly these criminals will steal from any kind of establishment, including churches, in order to accomplish their goal.
After being a victim of copper theft, a local Kansas City church has decided to put up barbed wire as a solution to this problem. Although barbed wire is undoubtedly better than taking no action at all, these copper thieves can certainly cut through the barbed wire in a matter of seconds.

Titan recently purchased a training simulator that allows us to put officers in different scenarios, which they might encounter out on the street. An instructor can control the outcome of a scenario, based on how the officer communicates and interacts with the suspect. Officers are given weapons which register within the simulator when used. If they choose to use force, the subject on the screen will react appropriately (cover their face if pepper sprayed, etc.).
This is a powerful training tool. It gives us valuable insight into how an officer communicates and makes decisions under stress. It gives us the advantage to make mistakes in the classroom and not in real life. It is an expensive piece of equipment, but very valuable as we can demonstrate how we want situations handled and get a comfort level of the officers understanding by showing us how to handle different situations. Scenarios range from asking a disgruntled employee to leave, all the way to an armed robbery.

Today a few members of the Titan team attended the Western Farm Show at The American Royal. Cattle and equipment are the two most common types of theft occurring within the agriculture industry. The Kansas Attorney General has even created a task force specifically for cattle theft.

Being a technology forward company, we are very excited about our most recent purchase. We will use our drone as an “eye in the sky” for some of our larger properties where we provide security.
We have made several posts regarding how camera systems often only record the crime after the fact, and do little to prevent a crime or lead to an apprehension of a suspect. In relation to that, we receive several phone calls from people who have a video surveillance system, but didn’t realize it was not working when they go back to get footage following an incident. Most customers get a camera system for their business, and never do any maintenance on it to ensure it continues to operate properly. Everybody gets busy, and it is easy to forget to check up on the equipment periodically.
Too often we hear from customers that they went back to review footage, only to find the system was not recording during the times that they really needed it. This could be because of equipment failure, network issues, or a camera could be knocked around or accidentally pointed in the wrong direction. A good rule of thumb is to periodically review footage on a weekly basis to ensure everything is working properly, and also inspect each camera to ensure they are not obstructed and pointing in the right direction. Many systems have the ability to send emails when there are network issues, or equipment failures. If you have a camera system, make sure you perform regular maintenance before you go back to review footage when you really need it and find out it is not working properly.
Below is an interesting video we received in our video monitoring center this week, from one of our client’s sites. As you can see, we got an alert of what appears to be a fire near a vehicle. One of our video analysts quickly reacted, and the police and fire departments were dispatched to the scene immediately. The conclusion was that somebody was using fireworks in an attempt to set vehicles on fire in the customers lot. They fled the scene when they heard the sirens coming, but luckily this was caught before the client suffered significant losses. Another example of preventing crime, not just recording it. Most cameras have the ability to generate some sort of alert based on “motion detection”. That basically means any pixel change will generate an alert or alarm. Not very effective when trying to monitor a site, as you get an alert with any lighting change, anytime a tree or bush moves in the wind, etc. You can mask out areas within the cameras view, but you will still generate a high level of false alerts.
Video analytics learn the scene within a cameras view, and can tell the difference between people, vehicles, etc., and can disregard smaller insignificant events. Analytic cameras can utilize loitering or dwelling rules, to generate an alert if a person or vehicle is an area beyond a certain time frame. In addition, you can be alerted when an object is placed or removed from within a scene. Many other options are available to include people counting, etc. Video analytics have come a long way, and are becoming very affordable. This makes remote video monitoring and detection much more successful when operators can spend their time looking at important events, as opposed to multiple false alarms. Attached is an example of person detection with analytics. You can see the camera recognizes the person within the scene, and alerts the operator to the event. This is perfect for remote sites, where nobody should be.
From time to time, we get some interesting videos of wildlife on some of our remote sites that we monitor. We have seen everything from mountain lions, to deer. Interesting to see, but also another reason for video verification. We are not calling the police with false alarms!
We are often interviewing potential Titan Officers who are coming from other security companies, and asking them about the training they receive from their current security company. Too often we hear “they gave me a uniform and an address, and told me to stand there.” A Lot of times these are armed officers who receive no training, no qualifications, no background or drug testing, etc. I won’t go into a long speech about how dangerous this is for the client.
The main goal of a security officer is to be an alert, visible presence, to deter any unwanted and/or criminal activity. There are rare times when they are forced to use a level of force, which is only in the rarest of circumstances. When and if they do, they should be properly trained on what to do (and more importantly, what not to do). There are very little, if any, regulations on licensing and training for security officers. There are many cut rate companies who pay as little as possible, and give their personnel little to no training when hired. We believe very much that proper training limits the liability exposure of our clients, and also keeps our people safe.
Most of the time proper verbal commands and communication can limit a situation from escalating, but that must be trained and taught as well. Leaving somebody out there with no training is a recipe for disaster, but is common place in the industry. Make sure when you are looking at security contractors that you learn as much about their training programs. If somebody is providing the cheapest price, there is a reason. Look for a comprehensive initial AND ongoing training program, and require it in your request for service. If you are using security currently, I think you will be shocked to find the lack of training that exists in the industry. Again, we are not training people to be super cops that are quick to use force on people. We are actually training the opposite, and teaching them to communicate and deescalate a situation. The point is if you are not training, you are leaving it up to the individual officer to make the decision, based on their limited experience.
